So you built an app and it works great on your computer. Cool... now how does anybody else ever see it? That's where Railway comes in.

Railway is a platform that runs your apps online. Think of it like renting a computer that's always on, always connected to the internet, and always ready to hand your app to anyone who shows up.

The Problem Railway Solves#

When you build an app on your computer, you're the only one who can use it. To let other people in, you need a computer that checks a few boxes.

  • Is always turned on (24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
  • Has a fast internet connection
  • Has a public address so people can find it
  • Is secure and protected from hackers

Running a server like that yourself is expensive and kind of a pain. You'd be buying hardware, paying for electricity, and babysitting the whole thing.

Railway: Your Server Made Easy#

Railway handles the hard parts for you. You skip buying and managing your own server, tell Railway about your app, and it takes care of the rest.

Here's what Railway does.

  • Runs your app on their computers
  • Keeps it online around the clock
  • Gives it an address so people can visit
  • Scales up if lots of people visit at once
  • Protects it with security features

You focus on building the app. Railway focuses on running it.

Why Choose Railway?#

Plenty of platforms can run your apps. Here's why Railway stands out.

Easy to Use#

Railway has one of the simplest setups around. Connect your GitHub account, pick a project, click deploy. Done. Your app is live in minutes.

I'll be honest with you, I'm not a developer. I'm an operator who came up through SEO and local marketing, so "simple setup" isn't a nice-to-have for me... it's the whole reason I'd pick a tool.

Developer-Friendly#

Railway was built by developers for developers. The interface is clean and modern, and you won't wade through confusing jargon or a million options to configure.

Affordable#

Railway gives new accounts a free trial with a one-time credit, so you can try it without paying anything. After that, small apps on the Hobby plan cost a few bucks a month, and you pay for what you actually use.

Works with GitHub#

When you push code to GitHub, Railway can deploy your changes automatically. Zero extra steps. This is called "continuous deployment," and it makes updating your app effortless.

What Can You Run on Railway?#

Railway can run almost any kind of app.

  • Web apps. Websites and web applications
  • APIs. Backend services that other apps can talk to
  • Databases. Store and retrieve data
  • Bots. Discord bots, Slack bots, and more
  • Background jobs. Tasks that run on a schedule

If it runs on a computer, chances are Railway can run it.

How Railway Works (The Simple Version)#

Step 1. You Connect Your Code#

Link your GitHub repository to Railway. Now Railway can see your project files.

Step 2. Railway Builds Your App#

Railway looks at your code and figures out how to run it. It installs dependencies and gets everything ready.

Step 3. Railway Runs Your App#

Your app starts running on Railway's computers and gets a web address anyone can visit.

Step 4. Updates Happen Automatically#

When you push new code to GitHub, Railway notices and updates your app on its own.

A Real Example#

Pixl watches a wooden toy train carry coloured blocks from a workshop to a glowing shop window
Push new code and it rolls out to your live app

Say you built a simple website with Next.js. Here's what happens next.

  1. You push your code to GitHub
  2. You create a new project on Railway
  3. You select your GitHub repository
  4. Railway detects it's a Next.js app
  5. Railway installs packages, builds the app, and starts it
  6. You get a URL like my-app.up.railway.app
  7. Anyone with that URL can see your website

The whole thing takes about 5 minutes. You never touch a server config or wrestle with complicated settings. It's just your app, live on the internet (pretty wild, right?)

TL;DR#

  • Railway runs your apps on the internet so other people can use them
  • It's like renting a computer that's always on
  • Railway is easy to use, affordable, and works with GitHub
  • You focus on building your app, and Railway handles running it
  • Updates deploy automatically when you push code to GitHub

What's Next?#

Now that you know what Railway is, let's make your account and poke around the dashboard. Next lesson, you'll sign up for Railway and connect your GitHub account.

This lesson ends with a short activity.
